The City of Memphis’s Bikeway and Pedestrian Program is accepting requests for bike rack placements throughout Memphis. Through this initiative, City staff will install bike racks (without cost to the requester) on the closest public right-of-way or City property to a business, school, non-profit organization, etc. The request form can be found here:
Increasing the amount of bicycle parking around the community allows Memphians to more easily use a bicycle for daily tasks. Lack of secure parking options can be a barrier to bicycling, and can lead to the locking of bicycles to inappropriate objects such as street trees or private fences.
Here are some key details about the request-a-rack initiative:
- Bike racks will only be installed on sidewalks in the public right-of-way or City property. The City will not install racks on private property, but can recommend suppliers and rack types to interested businesses or property owners.
- The exact placement of the racks must meet certain spatial requirements. If your first choice does not meet these requirements, the City will work with you to find a suitable location. These requirements ensure that the sidewalk remains accessible for individuals with limited mobility, and that other public safety considerations are met.
- Requests will be taken up on a first-come, first-serve basis. If your location is approved, the bike rack will be installed within two to three months. Additionally, we have a limited number of racks and your request may be placed on a waiting list to be installed after future orders.
