With spring around the corner, now is a great opportunity to get our fifth grade students thinking about the bicycle as a way of getting places (for fun or for transportation). Saris Cycling Group is asking 5th grade students from across the country to create a poster that reveals his or her understanding of the many different values of bicycling (it is fun, healthy and green).
Any fifth grade student in the state of TN is eligible to compete, even if they attend private or home schools. However, each school may only submit one eligible poster for competition. Each state will have a first, second, and third place winner, each earning a nice array of prizes: first (bicycle, helmet, and light), second (helmet and light), and third (helmet). In addition to a bike, light and a helmet one National winner will receive a three day/two night trip for two (parent or guardian and child) to Washington DC during the 2015 National Bike Summit (airfare, $200 food stipend, and lodging included). Additionally, the national winning school will receive bike parking for 20 bikes and The Hub System. The Hub is an active transportation tracking system that makes it easy, fun, and educational for a school to implement a walking & biking incentive program.
The deadline to submit entries for consideration in this year’s contest is March 7, 2014. All submissions must be postmarked no later than Friday, March 7, 2014 and sent to Kyle Wagenschutz, Bikeway/Pedestrian Coordinator, City of Memphis, Division of Engineering, 125 N.
