Have you ever enjoyed a bicycle ride out to the Shelby Forest General Store or maybe ventured a little further to the north? You may not have known this, but the roads you probably would have taken are a part of a nationwide system of roads across 10 states called the Mississippi River Trail.
Late last year, Shelby County Government worked with the Mississippi River Corridor – TN group and the Univeristy of Memphis Department of City and Regional Planning to lead public workshops and gain input on how to best enhance the trail use by users throughout Shelby County. You can download and view the report here.
One of the great conclusions of this report is that the MRT should be extended further south into Mississippi. Its current terminus in just south of downtown Memphis, jumping over into Arkansas and bypassing the great cultural and historic assets southwest Memphis has to offer, including T.O. Fuller State Park.
I’m looking forward seeing some of these recommendations implemented in the future!
